Student projects

Students interested in working on various research projects, developing and implementing new procedures and trying out new ideas related to any area of speech technologies, computer vision and pattern recogntiion are welcome to contact any of the members of our staff.

A few sample projects implemented as part of course-duties, master or PhD studies and conducted under the supervision of LUKS lab members are presented below.

Development of a biometric login application using open source tools

Project: Bachelor thesis, 2016

Program: Professional, Electrical Engineering, 1st Cycle

Author: Sebastjan Fabijan, supervisor: Vitomir Štruc

Short Description: The goal of this project was to develop a biometric login application (service) using open source tools, such OpenCV or OpenBR. The performance of the application was later assessed on 10 different face databases and its robustness to facial alignment was studied using various image alignment techniques. Part of the bachelor thesis was published in:

Learning similarities in deep face recognition systems

mreza

Course: Pattern Recognition

Program: Master Program, Electrical Engineering, 2nd Cycle

Author: Žiga Stržinar, advisor: Vitomir Štruc

Short Description: The goal of the project was to evaluate different procedures for similarity learning with deep face recognition models. Several regression technqiues were tested for this purposes (SVM, Least squares regression, Logistic regression, random forest regression. decision trees) with a AlexNet-like neural network.

Development of a machine vision system for weld control

Project: Bachelor thesis, 2015

Program: Professional, Electrical Engineering, 1st Cycle

Author: Primož Žufič, supervisor: Vitomir Štruc

Short Description: The goal of this project was to develop a machine vision system for weld control. In the scope of the project the entire system was developed including lighting and camera setups, hardware and software components and so on.

Facial landmark localiziation using correlation filters

Short Description: The goal of this project (2011) was to develop a facial landmarking procedure based on an extension of the ASEF correlation filters. The video demonstrates the results and shows the robustness of the developed approach.

Detection of glasses for browser font-size adjustment

Course: Human-Machine Interaction

Program: Prebologna University program of Electrical Engineering

Short description: The goal of this project was to detect whether the user is wearing glasses  or not and based on the detection result take some action. The video shows how the font-size used within a browser is adjusted, when a user with glasses is detected.
